Getting to Know Our Investment Philosophy

John Stanton |

Our portfolio management philosophy was developed in response to the simple math,  that if your portfolio is down 50%,  it takes a  100% return just to get back to even.

What is SGWP's  Investment Philosophy? We provide risk management for the equity portion of a portfolio. Our goal is to give clients increased peace of mind and control,  knowing their assets are being managed in a professional fashion with a focus on risk management.

Why is Risk Management so Important?

While most investors are familiar with compounding interest and how it increases returns over time, many fail to realize the damaging power of reverse compounding. For example, a -20% loss requires a gain of +25% just to get back to even. As losses become more extreme, so does the effect of reverse compounding. In a severe bear market, the S&P 500 can lose -50% or more – which requires a +100% gain to fully recover! This is why the foundation of our investment philosophy is risk management.  Minimizing losses is critical to the long-term success of your investment portfolio,  especially in the critical years right before, and during retirement.

How does  SGWP  Differ from Other Wealth Management Firms?

At SGWP,  we believe that portfolio construction must be based on a thorough assessment of market risk.  There are times in the market that require a cautious approach to market exposure,  and times in the market that require a more aggressive exposure.   Many other firms profess the ability to manage risk,  but do little,  or nothing,  to adjust stock market exposure.    At SGWP,  we follow the weight of the evidence,  and adjust portfolios accordingly.

This has allowed our portfolios to have a smaller exposure during market downturns,  of 2008,  2018, and 2022,  with larger exposure during the bottoming phase of these bear markets, increasing exposure in March of 2009,  January of 2019,  and January  of 2023.
